The journey of an aspiring filmmaker

My latest offering

Here’s My latest video, it was a bit of a rushed affair for several reasons.

I set up the Gloucestershire Pug Owners’ Club back in 2011. I was looking to find people of Cheltenham who had pugs so we could arrange meet ups, share pics, advice etc.
(I’m not a weirdo, I do in fact, own a pug myself. His name is Doug)

We have now well over 500 members and we try to meet a few times a year.

We met again again recently and for a change of scenery agreed to go to Crickley Hill, Leckhampton.

I arrived slightly late after a rearranged swimming lesson for our son. I was trying to get set up ready to shooting before the main group set off on our woodland circuit.

With myself and a reluctant Doug in tow, I tried to play catch up and we found ourselves surrounded by a mass of pugs and their owners gathered on the green.

After a little scamp around, we headed through the woodland, passing some huge cows in the next field.

The group seemed to break off at that point so we were bringing up the rear. When we reached the fork in the road we took the left hand path. There were only a few stragglers left at the back. By the time we got to the top of the hill to the visitors centre, it looked like everyone had gone already

As baby Casper was getting a bit sleepy and hungry at this point, we took our leave.

It was only when we had got in our car and made our way out that we realised, it looked like some of the others had taken a longer route and ended up coming out behind us.

Nevertheless, the dogs enjoyed themselves. An overcast day plays well into the hands of a pug as they can’t cope with heat very well. At any rate, a good time had by all.

The good

Variety of shots

i like the tracking sequence going down the hill,

The Bad

Arriving late meant I didn’t get to take any establishing shots

Lack of good close up angles

no b-roll

Abrupt ending

Summary

Although these videos are ‘a bit of fun’ for our members. I realise that I need to refine many techniques to get better.

My editing needs to include more than cuts and cross diccoslves to remain interesting.

shot composition needs some work.

The main areas for improvement are colour grading. You often here about videos having a cinematic feel or ‘look’. After a little look on how to do this myself, I think I’ll need to work hard to improve on this
